Memories in Music

Festival of Contemporary Music

"Memories in Music" offers a broad insight into a varied contemporary musical practice that is questioning canons and aesthetic norms and participating in historiography, commemorative culture and social transformation. The participating composers and musicians are members of the Akademie der Künste, protagonists of the Berlin scene and numerous international guests.
The music programme brings together current works (world premieres) with pieces from the 1970s/1980s. On a trail through the many niches of the Akademie der Künste's outdoor space in Hanseatenweg, audio-visual installations and live performances by musicians are being staged. Filmproductions and filmed live performances in the Akademie der Künste's outdoor space in Hanseatenweg will be streamed – bundled into multifaceted concerts – on the Internet on four evenings. The digital symposium "What Does Freedom Sound Like?" opens for a discussion on curating diversity.

In total, we will show 15 short portraits of 15 Berlin musicians from all over the world, who will present their interpretations of the famous melody "La Paloma", one portrait each day of the week. Their improvisations to this melody, some of which are very free, are passed on to the next musician in each case, a veritable "Daisy Chain", who first accompanies them and then continues to spin them. This series of freely and at the same time linked duos will be seen and heard on weekends from May 8, 2021. In May we will work with the Australian composer Cathy Milliken on the composition of a polyphonic version of this Dulab Alpaloma, in which the 15 musicians will also play together in trios or quartets. This version will then be shown on the TV program of ARTE. The idea for this program was developed by inpetto filmproduktion together with the Berliner Ensemble Extrakte.
